Self Portrait sketch

The artist I chose was the Post-impressionist Paul Gauguin. He used pretty bold color complements in his work, so I plan to do the same in this piece. The portrait will also have an emphasis on geometric shapes. My three layers of difficulty will be watercolor, acrylic, crayons and/or colored pencil, and my elements and principles are unity, color, and pattern. What sort of surface would you suggest I use to paint it on? Canvas, paper, or other?

  1. Cool idea! I especially like the various patterns in the background. I'm curious, are you going to draw yourself like you did in the last project (realistic style) or were you planning on making it looser, like in this sketch?

    1. Thanks! I'm planning on keeping the portrait fairly realistic, but with slight abstractions- making the face slightly more geometric/angular for example.
