Accident Project - Mira

So here is my project (sorry the photo is kind of blurry). I first created the background by painting a solid pink wash with beet juice. I spent wayyy too much time over break making an actual gingerbread house, so I figured that I might as well incorporate it into my art project.  I drew the house using watercolor pencils, and then colored the snow using pastels. I’m having trouble with the snow- I’m not completely sure what colors to use to create values/add depth (greys? blues?). Thanks.

  1. I love the gingerbread house! I think that the values are great in it. To add more values to the snow you should add blues, I think it's be a nice contrast as well. I really like the simple pink background and it compliments the piece nicely! Great job though it's really good!

  2. First of all I think it's really beautiful! So wintry and with the season. However, are you planning on adding anything else in the background? I think it could benefit from some slight additions if you like, though it's good how it is too. And I think a greyish light blue wash would work perfectly for the values, so keep going with that! Great work!

  3. *or if a wash won't work, just with the sort of material that you've been using is fine.

  4. Simple yet well executed focal point Mira. I think that you succeed very well with putting detail and texture in your scenery. I can remember a good amount of projects throughout your portfolio that really hit the nail on the head as far as background goes. The snow may be missing a few texture spots here and there, but I suggest only adding some light toned blues throughout to push depth and realism. Wonderful piece Mira!

  5. I love the picture and the idea of using beet juice was pretty awesome! I think blue might be something interesting since the greys in the snow is pretty cool but doesn't seem to be pushing a whole tone of values. I didn't even realize there were greys there until I looked closer. The snow without the greys wouldn't give it as much definition. But blues would've brought it out more. And one more thing: I LOVE the values on the gingerbread. I want to eat it.

  6. I think blue would be really cool to add value to the snow. You could also add some dark pink behind the house or as a gradient in the sky to give that depth, like with a chalk pastel. Looks great!

  7. I agree with Joanna, when I did my ice queen project last year I used blue to bring in darker values and it turned out pretty good! If you are feeling risky you might consider adding some purple tones in with the blue for the darkest value.

  8. Blues! Definitely use blues and possibly a little bit of purple for your values! Good job and good luck :)
