Hey it's Anna :)

So I'm a strong 74% done. I honestly can't explain what happened here, it's probably just my subconscious' fault for realizing this was supposed to be surrealism and just went nuts with everything in and around the box. Ms. Brought suggested I make pennies trickle down from my crayon savings bank and somehow extend my yellow brick road or rainbow river in the background. I'm not entirely sure how I'd do the latter, but if you have suggestions, I'm totally open to them. Originally it was a rainbow road for the shadow of the box but the road kinda was like, "heyyyy include me!" And things happened. There was wood off the banister with ivy wrapped around but now there's something under the stairway. It's too much black in one concentrated area for my tastes and detracts from the space in the box (get it? Space? Outer space? Okay.) so any suggestions would be great too. Thanks guys!

Alexa Buck 5BC Surreal Critique

Please excuse the atrocity that is this photo quality. In real life, the lines are not blurry, the colors make sense, and the faucet is actually visible, I swear. To finish this, I plan on caging in that cow and the wolf down there in the left corner and adding a few collaged people from that 1938 copy of National Geographic in the stomach up top. Please shower me with your advice, particularly in how to paint metal? If any of you know, please tell me.

Madison Deloach Surreal project

So far I have just the desert background type scene, but to make it surreal I plan to have desert foxes and maybe even other animals having a night time party. I'm not really sure where to place them though? Also I'm considering using part collage to make the party clothes or even all the animals, what do you think?

JFountain Surrealism

This project was created as I was strongly inspired by the surrealism artist, Max Ernst. In many of his paintings there are mini figures throughout his pieces and also a lot of line usage. I thought I would just add more figures into this project and also finish the white spots of course. If i were to create a more bold outline, would it make sense for the largest most detailed creature to become the focal point? Thoughts? Suggestions?

Joanna Seivard surrealism piece

For my project, I'm going with watercolor and collage media.  My shoebox originally contained the boot, some sunglasses, a New York metrocard, a CD, and a book I have called The Unofficial Guide to New York City.  After drawing my shoebox arrangement, I added some surreal elements to the objects.  It looks a little warped from the water on the paper.  Hopefully I can flatten it out a little bit. I have some collaging already done, and I plan to do more for the background.  That's why I chose watercolor: it gives a smooth look, without texture, so I can balance it with a busier background.  I started to add some of the pieces for the background, but unfortunately ran out of glue :/  Let me know what you think!

Mira's Surrealism Project

Hey guys, here is my project. I found an old advertisement for toasters, and thought it would be funny if arms were coming out of it, instead of toast. I used photoshop to layer arms of various shapes and sizes on the toaster. I also placed a blue filter on the background image. I am kind of stuck though... what should I do next? Maybe I could have the hands holding different objects? Also, I'm not really sure what to do with the right half of the page.. Any suggestions?

GStoute Surrealist Piece

Hey so this piece is supposed to be inspired by Dali. It features a dense forest/jungle environment with a barren wasteland in the background. A few of the main objects have yet to be painted and the trees need to have more details added. Other than that, are there any other suggestions/criticisms?

Asia's Surreal Stuffs

Hey everyone! This is my surrealism project. Sorry if it's hard to see or anything, my phone was spazzing out and it didn't want to take a nice picture. I based my project off of the process of burning CD's (like putting music onto CD's from my music library) but in a literal kind of way. I wanted to know a few things. Does it look a bit too cluttered around the CD, and how can I make my focal point of the CD pop more? Thanks :D

Sienna Surrealism

This is my project (obviously). I chose to collage my background.In the top right corner is this orb thing I put in my shoe box, it's reflective which is why I'm making a mosaic with crushed up pieces of a mirror, that part isn't quite complete yet but I'm going to have several layers of it so it's more 3D. Then I'm going to paint a string onto the "I love NY" keychain.I'm also working on the box in the right corner which is a bit tricky, I think I may change the color of the box so that it pops out more against the background. Do you guys think I should change the color of the box? If I do what color should I make it? Thanks! 

Surreal Project 5BC Sofija Chroneos

I am in the process of  adding more value/depth to the background, and I will be adding one more flower in either the upper right or left corner. I wanted the background to be simplistic, but I'm currently trying to make sure the background and collaged drawings look cohesive while still maintaining that goal. That has been my main struggle with this project, so do you guys have any advice? Thanks! 

Period 5BC Wednesday Critique Info

For the Wednesday critique, students in Period 5BC (or whatever period follows first lunch) should try to upload an image and description (if necessary) of their surrealist piece at 70% completion. hi everyone! it's emma hrabovsky. I was inspired by an artist named Alice Neel and in her portraits she uses lots of color to capture the feeling of the person who she is painting. I wanted to incorporate her style by adding in color but also stick with my style! I want to do a charcoal piece because I haven't done too many charcoal pieces yet. Im not sure what I should put in the background yet....anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking maybe a Forrest type background or something that's meaningful to me. I am also going bigger on this piece to challenge myself! 

Heyo, it's Anna. So my artist of inspiration is René Magritte. He was a surrealist painter who made objects defy gravity and almost make people question reality in a weird way. I want to use India Ink (because I must be something short of insane to use it for three projects in a row) around the acrylic color. The color will contrast the monochromatic blur of charcoal in the background. My ideas  behind this sketch are not few, as I tend to try to put something of me in each piece I do. I wanted to express the disconnected feelings expressed through my disconnected limbs and show how blindly I fly and leap through life by blindfolding myself and give myself features not unlike a monkey or some fearless creature. Anyway, I was wondering if you had any opinions or feedback? Thanks guys!

Self Portrait

My inspiration for this project would be Jeremy Kyler. So, I was planning on doing a patterned background of shapes in acrylic. I also planned on doing my portrait upside down! I am going to challenge myself by making different facial features different sizes, while creating an identical image of my face. I'm considering whether or not I should use charcoal to draw my face, or stick with my original plan of acrylic paint? Any suggestions?

Self Portrait Sketch

So, I was thinking of doing a full body watercolor and charcoal drawing for the self portrait. I wanted the focus to be on the flowers instead of my face, so I was planning on making my skin tone and hair greyscale, with some color tones in the dress. Thoughts? My inspiration was John Singer Sargent who was an Impressionist painter who worked with Claude Monet.

My artist of inspiration for this project is Degas. I like the way he blends a bunch of bright colors together to create a range of values that make sense for the area. I experimented with that on my sketch; I used pink, purple, orange and yellow to get values on the skin. Unfortunately it's hard to see on this photo :/ My question for you guys is, what color should I make my hair? It looks kind of rainbow now because I was trying all of them out to help me decide, but I don't want it to be all those colors on the project.

so I was inspired by René Magritte who is most famously known for her depictions of ordinary objects in unfamiliar situations. I only took a picture of this sketch because I'm leaning towards this one, however I'm thinking about changing the flowers to tacos because I just really love tacos and it would fit my inspiration a lot better. and I'm going to be wood burning again and adding water color at the end like I did with my last project (: suggestions or comments please!(~: (I'm aware the proportions aren't the best/: it was a quickie)

I've never tried this kind of composotion before so if anyone has any tips I'd love to hear :) I'm thinking of adding a collage of my cat or other cats in the background and also to make my hair in various colors to remember all the crazy colors I've had in my own hair. Portrait Sketch

A little clique, I know, but I'm using Vincent Van Gogh as my artist of inspiration. Something about the texture and background from the Portrait of the Postman. My last two pieces had pretty simple background and I wanted to challenge myself. The patterned paper on the right side is kind of my inspiration for that. I'm just worried that my painting will turn out too similar to Van Gogh's. Do you think my composition differs from how Van Gogh works or am I too similar to his paintings?

Anyway, I thought I would get a ton of color in this project like usual and really push the meaning behind the piece. I hope I will be able to really make the viewer curious. Hey all! This is my sketch for the portrait project we're doing. I got inspired by the eastern woodblock prints from Japan (the ones that typically have geishas or dragons fighting tigers and all that cool stuff) and figured I use that as a basis to emphasis pattern and movement. The drumsticks, controller buttons on the suit jacket, and the sharks all represent the things I enjoy. So there's that.

For this project I was inspired by David Hockney's photography collages (he calls them "joiners"). I love how they give the viewer a sense of time and space. In my sketches, I was thinking about making my own "joiner," but instead of taking new pictures,  I would use old pictures of myself from a variety of ages. The intent is to show the passing of time.

Hey guys! So this is a SUPER rough sketch but here is the basic idea: A collage of crazy stressful stuff in the background, a charcoal portrait on top of that, and acrylic tear and wash on the back.  Kinda like a smiling on the outside, freaking on the inside type thing.  I have done a huge charcoal portrait before though, so I don't know if I should do another one. Any ideas about anything? Thanks!

The artist I chose was the Post-impressionist Paul Gauguin. He used pretty bold color complements in his work, so I plan to do the same in this piece. The portrait will also have an emphasis on geometric shapes. My three layers of difficulty will be watercolor, acrylic, crayons and/or colored pencil, and my elements and principles are unity, color, and pattern. What sort of surface would you suggest I use to paint it on? Canvas, paper, or other? 

For my Taber project I decided to do a diptic symbolizing two separate concerts (same band) that I went to over the summer. Underlying in the left one is the song they opened with at that concert, and underlying in the right one is the song they opened with at that concert. The left concert was crazy and the right one was more laid back. What can I do to help unify the two more?

"Tree of Light" -Shelly Zhang

Shelly here! I am the only student doing 3D art for those who don't know me. This piece is the part of my concentration theme and right now I am trying to figure out what colors to glaze it. This is going to represent a winter tree so it will have have white glaze for the snow on the bottom and some parts on the tree. The tree will also have brown to make it look realistic. Also for those who don't know, this my theme is functional so this is a candle holding tree. My only question is what other colors could I possibly use other than white and brown?

Hey, it's Anna. So I got advice during the critique to use a shower squeegee for applying my wax to form the ripples below (which I'm grateful for because I tried wires and beads and newspaper and I don't have time to run through all the letters in the alphabet for all these backup plans). I haven't gotten to try the technique yet because I only just got my hands on a squeegee today. 

She also suggested to get some orange in the lower half of my project and because they're true compliments, it would balance out well. I tried to bring the more important words out more in the top half and will eventually get some sort of texture up there too. I was thinking lines or waves extending outward from the center but I wanna know what you think. 

What could I do to give my project a better sense of unity (and incorporate more textures)?

Alright, so what we've got here is some choice project-ing that needs to be finished, but in the typical Alexa fashion, weenie feelings are holding it back. I think I'm definitely gonna use a brush to add some depth to the face, but I guess my two major questions are:

1. How can I make the text pop? It's kind of lost in the ether right now.
2. Should I bring the red over "poetry" into the eye and mouth drippings?

During the critic last Friday, someone said the the green from the tree on the left took away from my picture overall. I added light an dark blue on top of it after scraping away some of the green. I also let some of the green show through all though it may be hard to see in the picture. Do you think it helped? Or is it still overbearing?

Hi it's Claudia!

Alrighty so basically this is based off of a poem I wrote last year when my emotional state wasn't very high. It's mostly based upon waiting and time passing and such, thus the pocket watch. I know I have yet to finish the clock face with the numbers and hands. I kind of wanted to make the hands look like limp or like they're not rally working, do you have any advice for that? And then fore texture I know I'm lacking, what kind of texture do you think I can add? Michelle said that I should use more cardboard and then squeegee a little bit to add some more interest in like the streakiness of it all. So that's basically all I have sooooo.... yeah tell me what you think!
